Earlier this year, John Rowe visited the Charleston port complex and toured the Wando terminal with Marion Bull, manager, marketing for South Carolina Ports Authority. He also visited  MSC’s South American United States headquarters where he met with Amanda Diniz, import trade manager, and Jeff Johnson, assistant vice president South America imports.

Here are some good Charleston port facts:

• Wando port terminal is handling vessels up to 14,000 TEUs.
• 4 million twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEUs) handled in 2019.
• The port was ranked number eighth largest import port in the United States in 2018.
• Some 194K+ vehicles were exported in 2019.
• The dockside crane makes 37 crane moves per hour creating the most productive port in the United States.
• On average there’s a 60 minute  truck turn for two-way container delivery and pickup.
• Two inland ports with overnight rail have service six days a week from Charleston port:
  • Inland Port Greer, S.C. is located on I-85, 212 miles from Charleston and approximately halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte.
  • Inland Port Dillon is brand new opening in April 2018. It is located on I-95 near the South Carolina/North Carolina border.
• The port’s economic impact $63.4 billion statewide.
